BN's winnable candidate - you better believe it!
Harakahdaily, | 16 April 2013 |
Apr 16: After all the rhetoric by Barisan Nasional leader Najib Razak about only placing winnable candidates at the coming general election, people like Perkasa vice president Zulkifli still made it as a candidate to represent Najib's 1Malaysia battlecry.
Najib, who is also the Selangor BN chief, declared Zulkifli, who in 2008 won the Kulim-Bandar Bharu parliamentary seat as a PKR candidate, to contest against PAS's Khalid Samad in Shah Alam.

In an immediate reaction, Khalid pledged to carry out a 'healthy' campaign against BN, although his rival represents one of Malaysia's most racist and divisive groups which has in the past used abusive and vulgar language on its critics. Only recently, Zulkifli angered the Hindu community by condemning Hinduism. His blog is also littered with vulgar innuendos despite his claim of "fighting for Islam".
“I’m sure the people in Shah Alam will be able to evaluate the BN candidate this time by recalling all his past speeches as well as his record in Kulim-Bandar Baru,” Khalid said.
Meanwhile, Felda chairman Isa Samad - once punished by UMNO's own disciplinary board for bribing delegates to vote for him as a vice president - is also contesting. He will stand for the Jempol parliamentary constituency against former singer Aishah, who is standing as a PAS candidate.
Johor Menteri Besar Abdul Ghani Othman will relinquish his state seat to battle with DAP advisor Lim Kit Siang in Gelang Patah. Not surprisingly, the move sparked a protest yesterday by MCA local members.
Similarly, Melaka chief minister Ali Rustam is also being removed from the state, and will contest in Bukit Katil.
In Kedah, Mukhriz Mahathir, son of former UMNO strongman Dr Mahathir Mohamad, has been named as the candidate for Ayer Hitam state seat.
PAS vice president Mahfuz Omar said the move confirmed speculation that Mahathir had pressured Najib to groom Mukhriz as Menteri Besar in the unlikely event of a Pakatan Rakyat defeat.
“However we are confident that the people know what is good for the country,” added Mahfuz.
In Perlis, Menteri Besar Mohd Isa Sabu did not make it into BN’s winnable list. Instead, his arch-rival Shahidan Kassim is named for Arau the parliamentary seat against PAS deputy Murshidul Am Haron Din.
Meanwhile, the battle between PAS vice president Husam Musa and BN secretary general Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor is on, despite speculation that the latter would be dropped following a police report against him alleging assault.
